Insurance
Generally I work only with private pay clients; however, occasionally I will accept PPO plans and insurance as an “out-of-network” provider. You would need to contact your insurance company and ask if they will allow you to see the professional therapist of your choice. In order to ensure those with financial difficulties and disabilities are able to access services, I accept Medicare and Medi-Cal as payment for sessions. The downsides of using insurance include the following:
Diagnosis
Before paying for treatment, insurance companies require that the client be diagnosed with a mental disorder. Many clients’ issues don’t rise to the level to warrant such a diagnosis. This can present ethical issues and leave clients with a mental health diagnosis in their medical records.
Confidentiality
If your insurance company is paying for your therapy, they have the right to, and frequently will, demand copies of records on your therapy. This requires the therapist to divulge details that otherwise would remain private.
Self Determination
When insurance companies are involved in your therapy, they have the right to make decisions about your care that would normally be between you and your therapist. This means someone not in the therapy room, and normally without appropriate mental health training, may decide the duration and content of your therapy.
